Can I get free samples?

If you are unfamiliar with magnets, we understand that working with these products in your design can be an interesting-- and difficult-- process.  Unfortunately we are not able to provide free samples, except under certain circumstances.

However, we ARE able to offer sample packs for sale, which contain a range of rare earth magnets in popular sizes and pull strengths.

Aussie Magnets does not provide product design engineering advice. We are able to give you in-depth information on our magnetic products, but you will need to determine the suitability of a product independently. The best way to determine the suitability of a magnet is to purchase a small quantity (or a sample pack) and test, prototype, test, prototype and test them for yourself!

Which rubber material thickness?

 The thickness of magnetic rubber material varies between products. We stock a variety of products in varying thicknesses to suit a multitude of applications.

Regardless of thickness magnetic rubber cannot attract through material or an air-gap; your magnetic rubber must be in direct contact with a ferrous surface!

0.4mm Thick
The thinnest 0.4mm magnetic material is inherently lightweight, and magnetically weak.
SUITABLE FOR: This is suitable for inexpensive labels, and mass-produced printed promotional magnets that are cost-effective.

0.6mm Thick
Thin 0.6mm material is still lightweight, with moderate magnetic strength.
SUITABLE FOR: This is suitable for general purpose applications, whiteboard labels, and printed promotional magnets.

0.9mm Thick
Thicker 0.9mm is generally a higher quality, with added durability and strength.
SUITABLE FOR: This is better suited to commercial applications, such as warehouse racking, vehical signage, and craft.

1.6mm Thick
The thickest 1.6mm material is the strongest and most durable rubber available.
SUITABLE FOR: Used in specialty applications where the power of the magnetic flux is critical to the application.

Choosing the right magnet is tricky. If you spend a few moments understanding how magnets work, you'll be much more likely to get the right magnet the first time!

The most distinguishing feature of our magnets is the material they are made from. Rare Earth (also known as Neodymium), Ceramic Ferrite, Alnico Cast Steel, and Flexible Magnetic Rubber all have different characteristics that are better suited to some jobs than others.

You need to decide what is most important to you. Consider your application - what is the single most important specification? Perhaps you need the magnet to fit into a given size, or perhaps you need the magnet to lift a specific weight (aka Pull Strength)? Pick the most important characteristic, and then see what magnet is best suited using the table below.

Magnet Pull Strengths

Magnets are a difficult product to understand; the true measurement of a magnet is its "Gauss" reading... but who understands that!?For ease of use, the measurement "Pull Strength" is used instead by Aussie Magnets as a way of demonstrating the relative power between individual magnets.  It is not a measurement of what the magnet will lift or hold!  It is the mathematically calculated force required to remove the magnet from 3mm mild steel.

What it means!

The strength attained from a magnet depends entirely on the iron content of the object or surface it is being attached to.Put simply, our "Pull Strength" means the strength required to remove the magnet from 3mm mild steel.We have used tests and mathematical calculations to make this approximation, though the actual strength may differ in "real-life" applications and operating environments.

What it does NOT mean!

It is not a measurement of what the magnet will lift or hold.Therefore, "Pull Strength" is not a measurement you should rely on in determining the suitability of a magnet for a specific application.The strength attained from a magnet depends entirely on the iron content of the object or surface it is being attached to. The strength you achieve in your application will always be higher or lower than the "Pull Strength" rating we assign a magnet! It is affected by a number of factors.

Example



A magnet has a "Pull Strength" listing of 7.8kg.This means it would take 7.8kg of force to remove the magnet from 3mm thick mild steel.It doesn't mean you will be able to lift or hold 7.8kg on your application.

Units of Magnetism

Measuring the strength of an invisible force is difficult. Throughout our website you'll see a number of different scales used to measure the strength of a magnet. Each of these measurements have their advantages and disadvantages, and can interpret the same magnet differently.So, which unit is most important to you?

Pull Strength
The approximate, calculated amount of force required to remove the magnet from a piece of un-coated 3mm mild steel. It's also the maximum amount of weight the magnet will support when attached to the same steel. e.g. 452 grams, 14kg. 


Thicker metals will increase the pull strength, whereas thinner metals will decrease the pull strength of the magnet. You should consider the material you will be attaching your magnet to when evaluating the required pull strength.Allowances should be made for any coatings (such as powder coating, paint, vinyl, plastic, etc.) which may affect the strength of the magnet.At Aussie Magnets, all pull strengths are measured against 3mm mild steel. The strengths we list are mathematical calculations only, and will almost always be higher or lower depending on your application!As such, pull strength measurements should be used as helpful guides only; they should not be explicitly relied upon for product/project design purposes. We advise customers to engage qualified product design engineers, or conduct their own testing, to determine the suitability of any magnetic product prior to use.

Grade
A balance of the thermal properties of the magnet with the maximum potential energy. e.g. N38, N42, C8Rare Earth and Ferrite magnets are available in different grade specifications. Generally, a higher grade offers more strength at the same size, but its thermal properties tend to decrease, meaning that the magnet cannot withstand high temperatures before losing its magnetism.For most purposes a higher grade is desirable, except where operating temperature is critical.Read more about 'Grades'

Gauss
A surface measure of the magnetic flux density per square centimeter. e.g. 3000 gaussTake care when using gauss – it's possible for a tiny magnet and a large magnet to have exactly the same gauss reading. Why? Because Gauss is measured per square centimeter and is a measure of the potential of the material, rather than the strength of the individual magnet.Higher grade magnets have a higher potential and hence, a higher gauss reading, explaining why some of our larger magnets have a gauss less than our smaller magnets - it's because our smaller magnets are of a higher grade, allowing us to pack more strength into a smaller size.

Our magnets can be magnetised across any axis, hence allowing them to be used to different effect. The 'Direction of Magnetism' determines on which side of the magnet the north and south poles appear.Here are our most common directions of magnetism:

Magnetic Poles are the surfaces from which the invisible lines of magnetic flux emanate and connect on return to the magnet. When allowed to rotate freely, the 'North' pole of a magnet will seek the North Pole of the Earth, and likewise the 'South' pole of a magnet will align with the South Pole of the Earth.

Where required, we can identify the poles of your magnets, or you can identify them yourself using our Polarity Identifiers. Some of our magnets feature North Pole Dots which indicate the North Pole of a magnet. If this feature is essential to you, contact us to find out which magnets feature north pole dots.

There are three main types of iron-based, but artificially made, permanent magnets.

They are manufactured from various combinations of raw material elements, which are combined through a powder metallurgical process to produce different magnet types that are shaped by various moulding, casting and bonding processes.

Iron becomes magnetic when an external magnetic force is applied and one or two electrons in the iron atoms are reorientated. No other element has electrons that can be affected by an external magnetic force as easily as iron. But, even the few electrons in iron that exhibit this flexibility will not retain it for long. Heat or impact can cause the electrons to revert to their random orientation and magnetisation is lost. Because of this, manufacturers usually add another element that not only makes the magnet 'permanent' but also adds other special qualities, depending on the element added. Elements most commonly used are nickel, boron, cobalt, samarium, strontium and neodymium.

The most widely used permanent magnets are: Rare Earth, Ferrite and Alnico.

RARE EARTH

• Chemical composition: Nd2Fe14B. Produced by powder metallurgical process.
• Readily available in various forms and shapes, nickel-plated.
• Very hard and brittle, cannot be drilled or machined.
• Extremely stable and highly resistant to demagnetisation.
• Precise calibration is achievable for critical applications.
• Excellent strength/cost value.
• Relatively low resistance to corrosion.
• Not suitable for high temperatures application (80¼C plus).

• Produced by combining plastic or rubber polymers with magnetic powders.

• Can be supplied with a self-adhesive backing, plain brown, white gloss or colour.
• Stable and corrosion resistant.
• Good resistance to demagnetisation.
• Resistance to chemicals is moderate.
• Readily available at low cost.

In rare earth neodymium magnets, the grade refers to the materials used in the production process. Material "grades" range from N27 to N52 (higher is stronger).Some grades may be followed with a letter designation, which denotes a special increased temperature feature of a product.i.e.

Ferrite

Ferrite magnet products follow a similar material classification system, where "N" is replaced by one of the following letter codes:

"C" - (US standard)
"HF" - (European standard)
"Y" - (Chinese standard)

The "C" classification is the most commonly used Ferrite grading convention, and industry material "grades" range from C1 to C12 (higher is stronger).

What is rust?
Rusting is a chemical reaction between iron and oxygen, in the presence of water. The reaction creates a flaky, reddish iron-oxide coating as the iron corrodes away. Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass will eventually convert entirely to rust and disintegrate. Rusting is more prevalant in coastal or marine environments, where there is greater exposure to moisture.

How does rust affect metal and magnets? 
Magnets only attract to materials which are ferrous. Ferrous means "relating to, or containing, iron". As such, magnets need iron to attract to. As rust spreads, the iron corrodes and diminishes. A reduction in iron content means there is less ferrous material for a magnet to attract to. The end result is that magnetic power/induction is reduced.

Will the magnets rust? 
Any material containing iron will rust, unless properly protected. Information on our Rare Earth and Ferrite magnets are as follows:

RARE EARTH 
Our Rare Earth magnets are spray-coated in a protective nickel coating to combat corrosion. This coating is susceptible to chipping, which may allow corrosion to occur.

FERRITE
Our Ferrite magnets are un-coated, but are less susceptible to corrosion due to their consitution. They are ceramic in nature which gives them a greater resistance to rust, however over time may require some form of coating or protection.

How can I prevent rusting? 
Rusting occurs when iron is exposed to air and moisture. The way to combat rusting is to prevent exposure to air and moisture. This can be done by coating/sealing the magnet or metal entirely in some protective layering (such as plastic, rubber, glue, etc.). Make sure you have sealed the magnet surface entirely! You need to cut off all sources of oxygen and moisture.

Will a protective coating affect the magnet? 
Magnets operate when brought into proximity with iron. When you apply a coating, you increase the distance between magnet and iron. Therefore, thick coatings will result in a reduction in magnet strength.

Self-Adhesive Flexible Magnetic Strip - SIGNS - FLYSCREENS - DOUBLE GLAZING
Width 12.5mm x 1.6mm Thickness x 30mtrs per roll. For non-steel surfaces use both 'A' and 'B' rolls. Matchpull "A" roll attatches strongly with 'B' roll. Features 3M 9448 adhesive.
Uses can be for sticking signs to non-steel surfaces or FLY SCREEN mesh. Ideal strip for applications: holding up posters/advertising/craft or *double-glazing [scroll down for information on double glazing]  For stronger double glazing applications refer to Item: 5270

What is Matchpull?

We developed 'Matchpull' to allow two flexible strips to attach to each other. Conventional flexible rubber will not align correctly on top of itself because the north and south magnetic poles within the rubber are repelling, causing the strip to jump off-centre. Our Matchpull A & B rolls are specifically manufactured with opposing pole lines within the magnet, hence allowing them to affix together perfectly.

How do I use Matchpull?

To connect magnetic strips to each other, purchase both an 'A' and 'B' roll matchpull strips and attach each to a separate surface. To attach strips to a steel surface (anything other than another tape), you only need to purchase an 'A' roll.

DOUBLE GLAZING

Measure the external measurements of where the acrylic is to be mounted.The acrylic is cut to size. Two pieces of magnetic tape are attached around the perimeter of the acrylic. Do not mitre the corners.  The magnetic tape is black/brown.  Coloured edging and corner pieces can be purchased from hardware stores to attach to finish it off.Make sure you clean the window surrounds where the acrylic is to be fitted, peel off the backing tape from the magnetic strip and in one action, firmly press the acrylic into position.With one part of the magnetic tape permanently on the window surrounds and the other part permanently on the acrylic, the acrylic will be held into place.When you are required to remove the acrylic, the two pieces of magnetic tape will separate and the acrylic pane can be removed and replaced.

How much can a magnet be heated?

Our items come in several product families (Rare Earth, Ferrite, Alnico and Rubber), and have maximum operating temperatures which should not be exceeded.The temperatures for each product family are listed as follows:

FERRITE
Maximum 180°c

ALNICO
Maximum 550°c

What happens if we go over the temperature threshold?

The strength of the magnet will begin to diminish rapidly once the maximum operating temperature threshold has been exceeded. This loss of power is permanent and irrecoverable.At extreme temperatures, there is potential for the magnet to ignite and combust.

Which magnet has the best temperature resistance?

Our Alnico magnets are manufactured from cast steel, and have the best temperature resistance (up to 550°c).

Is it possible to increase the temperature resistance?

Magnet operating temperatures can be increased by using specialised material grades during manufacture.For more information, see our online information resource "What are Magnet Grades?".

Contrary to popular belief, a Rare Earth magnet is not a solid block of metal!

Exterior Coating

Magnets are coated in a protective outer layering, which combats corrosion and chipping. Ordinarily, magnets are triple coated as "Ni, Cu, Ni".In some circumstances, magnets may have different coating, such as gold. This may be useful in instances where magnets will come into frequent contact with bare skin, and "Ni"  irritation on the skin is to be avoided.Furthermore, the glossy silvery or golden coatings improve the general aesthetics of the magnet!

Magnet Interior

The interior of a magnet is comprised of a multitude of various chemical elements. These elements are jet-milled down into powder and blended into a slurry composition, before they are baked repeatedly at over 1,000°c.Click here to read our detailed article "How is a Magnet Made?"Once solidified, the interior of a magnet is an extremely light, porous, brittle material which is highly receptive to "permanent" magnetisation. This means that the unit (once magnetised) can support a powerful static magnetic field, without an additional external input of power!As such, the magnet is very lightweight and strong, but cannot be drilled, machine-cut or hammered.All or a combination of the following elements are incorporated into rare earth magnets. Materials can be added, removed, or substituted to alter the grade and property of magnets!

		Neodymium [Nd] - A metallic element belonging to the "rare earths" or "Lanthanides" chemical sub-category. This is an essential component used in the manufacture of modern rare earths / neodymium permanent magnets.
		Iron [Fe] - The most common element on earth (by mass). Magnets require the presence of iron material to enable magnetic attraction.
		Boron [B] - A silvery-grey mettaloid. Pure boron is produced with difficulty, as it tends to form containing small amounts of carbon or other elements.
		Samarium[Sm] - A hard, silvery element which oxidizes easily when exposed to air. This material has a high temperature threshold, and is used in high grade rare earths magnets.
		Cobalt[Co] - A ferromagnetic chemical element. It is a hard, lustrous silvery metal used in the production of high-strength, magnetic alloys.
		Zirconium[Zr] - A lustrous, gray-white, strong transition metal that resembles titanium. Zr is commonly used as an alloying element, due to its high resistance to corrosion.
		Aluminium [Al] - A chemical element with high resistance to corrosion. It is a silvery-white metal, most commonly used as an alloy. This material is non-magnetic.

Units of Magnetism

1. RAW MATERIALS
Minerals - such as Neodymium, Iron and Boron - are sourced from all around the world. Many required elements, such as Neodymium, are very uncommon and newver found on their own. They must be heavily refined & processed before the material is useable!



2. MILLING & BLENDING
The course materials are jet-milled down into powder, which is then blended into an incredibly precise composition.At this point the powder is in danger of oxidation, and must be kept in an inert gas, such as Argon!



3. PRESSING
The mixture is compacted into shape and a magnetic field is appled to ensure all particles are aligned... this maximises magnetic output!



4. SINTERING
The ingredients are sintered at temperatures in excess of 1,000°c to achieve 99% density.During this process, the magnet will shrink by nearly a fifth of its size! They are rapidly cooled, then re-heated to 600°c before being cooled again.



5. FINISHING
A "clean-up" takes place by sanding the magnet into exact measurements. Finishing touches are added last. Finishing touches may include the addition of a glossy nickel protective coating, re-magnetising, and marking polarity.

Magnetic Poles are the surfaces from which the invisible lines of magnetic flux emanate and connect on return to the magnet. When allowed to rotate freely, the 'North' pole of a magnet will seek the North Pole of the Earth, and likewise the 'South' pole of a magnet will align with the South Pole of the Earth.

Where required, we can identify the poles of your magnets, or you can identify them yourself using our Polarity Identifiers. Some of our magnets feature North Pole Dots which indicate the North Pole of a magnet. If this feature is essential to you, contact us to find out which magnets feature north pole dots.

There are three main types of iron-based, but artificially made, permanent magnets.

They are manufactured from various combinations of raw material elements, which are combined through a powder metallurgical process to produce different magnet types that are shaped by various moulding, casting and bonding processes.

Iron becomes magnetic when an external magnetic force is applied and one or two electrons in the iron atoms are reorientated. No other element has electrons that can be affected by an external magnetic force as easily as iron. But, even the few electrons in iron that exhibit this flexibility will not retain it for long. Heat or impact can cause the electrons to revert to their random orientation and magnetisation is lost. Because of this, manufacturers usually add another element that not only makes the magnet 'permanent' but also adds other special qualities, depending on the element added. Elements most commonly used are nickel, boron, cobalt, samarium, strontium and neodymium.

The most widely used permanent magnets are: Rare Earth, Ferrite and Alnico.

RARE EARTH

• Chemical composition: Nd2Fe14B. Produced by powder metallurgical process.
• Readily available in various forms and shapes, nickel-plated.
• Very hard and brittle, cannot be drilled or machined.
• Extremely stable and highly resistant to demagnetisation.
• Precise calibration is achievable for critical applications.

Ferrite

Ferrite magnet products follow a similar material classification system, where "N" is replaced by one of the following letter codes:

"C" - (US standard)
"HF" - (European standard)
"Y" - (Chinese standard)

The "C" classification is the most commonly used Ferrite grading convention, and industry material "grades" range from C1 to C12 (higher is stronger).

NOTE: Aussie Magnets uses the "C" grading convention. In accordance with our quality standards, we do not stock products below C8. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Pull Strength:
The weight (in metric units) required to remove a magnet from industry-standard 3mm thick mild steel. A pull strength is calculated for each product wherever possible, and is helpful when comparing two magnets.

NOTE: It is not possible to produce a pull strength for some product styles (e.g. capped, horseshoe, etc). These "strengths" are measured using mathematical calculations, and should be used as a general guide only.

Grade:

Gauss:
A measurement of "magnetic induction" (B), equal to one ten-thousandth of a Tesla. Gauss indicates the number of lines of magnetic flux per square centimetre, under the CGS metric system. 

Direction of Magnetism:
The axis through which a product is magnetised. For example, a disc magnet measuring Ø20 x 3mm will be magnetised through its 3mm thickness. This means the polar lines run upwards through that thickness, making the large circular face magnetic.

Products may be magnetised axially, diametrically or otherwise (e.g. multipole).

Introduction

Permanent magnets produce their own persistent, unsupported magnetic field.

Magnetic fields are potentially hazardous, as they may:

• disrupt freight carrier electronic tracking/handling equipment
• cause damage to other articles and products being shipped in its proximity.
• interfere with aircraft navigational instruments.

To accomodate this, all orders despatched by Aussie Magnets are packaged to meet compliance with international shipping regulations on the transport of magnetic goods. Aussie Magnets references four main sources of regulation for the transport of magnetic goods (listed below).

At the relevant distances set out by the individual regulations, most Aussie Magnets product’s Gauss and/or Oersted (A/m) measurements fall significantly below the restricted threshold.

By Plane

On commercial passenger flights, magnets can be transported in your checked-baggage (in most instances). Although magnets are rigorously regulated, they are not classified as hazardous or dangerous goods.

While magnets may also be transported on carry-on luggage, this is not advisable. A lack of understanding by airport security may mean delays or possible confiscation of the goods.

RESTRICTIONS:
For carriage by aircraft, any package which has a magnetic field of more than 0.00525 gauss measured at 4.5 m (15 feet) from any surface of the package.

Magnets can present a grave risk of bodily harm in many ways, as outlined below. The risks can vary with each type and size of magnet.

Crushing Risk

Many magnets, particularly Rare Earth magnets, can have pulling strengths measuring hundreds of kilograms of force. Uncontrolled magnets can attract to eachother, or metal, from surprising distances and can slam together with incredible velocity. We have had customers lose fingers from improperly handling Rare Earth magnets.

Course of action:

•     Always move other magnets / metal tools / ferrous (“iron”) objects away from working area, to create a safety zone (minimum 1 metre away in all directions).

•     If your hands or other body part is trapped between large magnets, remain calm and do not move. Do NOT attempt to free your trapped body part yourself, as this can exacerbate the positioning of the magnets and increase the pulling force. Instead, shout for help from your colleagues. Use wood or plastic items (tape items together if necessary) to support the magnet, and- where possible- wedge / build / “pack out” the gaps between the magnets.

•     You need to increase the distance between the magnets, which will in turn diminish their pulling strength. The aim here is to detach the magnets from eachother, or- at the very least- allow enough space for the trapped body part to be slid free.

Splinter Risk (Risk to Eyes & Skin)

Magnets that crack or chip can create incredibly sharp fragments that will easily penetrate the skin and eyes. Often fragments which break away will be propelled away at high velocity, and can easily enter the eyes or skin.

Course of action:

•  Always wear gloves and safety glasses when handling magnets. If cuts or abrasions occur, flush area with running water and ensure no fragments remain.

• If fragments cannot be removed, consult your doctor or hospital (depending on severity).

 Ignition Risk

Grinding and machining magnets produces a dust which, in certain circumstances, can be flammable. Magnets cannot be cut or ground “after-market”; their size can only be determined during the production process.

Course of action:

•     Do not grind or attempt to machine cut magnets.
•     If sparks or flames arise, extinguish immediately by dousing or submerging in water.

Swallowing / Inhalation Risk

The risk of swallowing magnets in adults is minimal, but not unheard of. The risk relates to teenagers and children who may use smaller magnets inappropriately, such as makeshift imitation tongue and nose studs. From here it is easy to swallow or inhale the components accidentally. Once swallowed, magnets can end up attracting to each other from different areas of the body, pulling together through the walls of the stomach and intestines, causing (often fatal) internal haemorrhaging. The chemical makeup of Rare Earth magnets are also poisonous, and must not be ingested for this reason also.

Course of action:

•     If magnets are swallowed, call 000 and seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

Skin Irritation

Magnets are triple coated in Nickel and Copper to combat oxidation. Magnets should not be handled for long periods of time, nor worn against the skin, as this can cause a Nickel rash in some people.

 Course of action:

• Wear rubber gloves if prolonged handling is expected by hand. If nickel rash appears, discontinue handling. If severe rash occurs, consult your doctor.

Risk to Pacemakers & Implants

Generally speaking, modern pacemakers, neuro-stimulators and implants are not made primarily from “ferrous” (iron) materials. That being said, some devices, can be influenced and disrupted by magnets.

Course of action:

•  Regardless of the make and material of implant, patients with these devices should err on the side of caution and not handle magnets.

•  If accidental disruption occurs, call 000 and seek emergency medical assistance immediately. First Aid may be necessary (follow DRSABCD).

Handle carefully when bringing two magnets together; be prepared for the force of attraction to increase quickly and dramatically when drawing closer.

Be careful that you do not pinch or trap your fingers!


Step 1.
Move all metal objects away. Place magnets on a desk or workbench, with a single magnet overhanging the edge.

Step 2.
Hold magnets down with one hand, and use the palm of your free hand to push down on the other magnet.


Step 3.
You may need to exert strong pressure to separate. Once separated, isolate the magnet to prevent re-attraction.

Additional Information


Be careful that you do not pinch or trap your fingers.
Protective eyewear and gloves should be worn when holding, separating or handling magnets.
Where appropriate, you may also try separating magnets by forcing thin blocks of wood between individual magnets. 

Ferrite is a heavy, economical material produced using a combination of Iron, Zinc, Barium and/or Strontium. Due to the sintering process of manufacturing, special care must be taken to ensure safety when handling or storing these magnets.

Mechanical Shock:

Magnets are brittle and may damage easily
WARNING - DO NOT:
 ...drop the magnet onto a hard surface.
 ...allow magnets to smash together in an uncontrolled fashion.
...allow the magnet to smash together with metal.
...strike with tools, or attempt to machine cut.

Temperature:

Maximum operating temperature of the magnets is 180°C. Exposure to temperatures above these maximum limits may lead to loss of magnetic coercivity.

Store and use magnets in a cool environment to prevent demagnetisation.

Your Ferrite magnet may be demagnetised by "Rare Earth" permanent magnets. Do not store together.

Temperature

Maximum operating temperature of the magnets is between 80°C and 100°C. Exposure to temperatures above these maximum limits may lead to loss of magnetic coercivity.

Moisture

External nickel plating will combat corrosion of the magnet. For further protection, apply a protective coating of adhesive sealant or similar to all exposed areas.
Although plating discolouration may occur over time, this does not affect the quality of the magnet.

Demagnetisation

Rare Earth magnets will gradually suffer diminished coercivity if subjected to repeated mechanical shock, or excess temperatures.

Can you make custom magnets?
Can you produce a customised magnet for my application?

Yes, but you probably don't want us to do that for you.

The set-up and tooling costs of making a newly sized magnet is very cost prohibitive in small amounts, and thus we do not manufacture in custom sizes unless ordered in large commercial quantities.

Due to this expense, before we even ask you what size you're interested in, the first question we are going to ask is "How many crates of them do you want"?

Note, we do not manufacture one-offs or prototype sizes.

What are my alternatives?
We absolutely recommend you purchase an "off-the-shelf" magnetic component.

In almost ALL cases, it is phenomenally more cost-effective to change YOUR design to suit the MAGNET.  Not the other way around!

Our cost calculations are complicated, and are based on numerous factors. These include the cargo's weight, cubing, destination, the suitability of freight carriers, the dollar value of the order, and ability to trace through the delivery network.

Orders with a high value will be shipped via a method that allows article tracking, and will be automatically covered by insurance at no extra cost to you. For most orders over $500 shipping costs can be waived upon request.

Please note that we are constantly looking for ways to reduce our freight costs, and will always pass these discounts on to our customers.

Why do they need to be shipped in big packaging?
We understand that at a glance our freight charges appear higher than expected, given the small size of the products you are ordering. We are often asked why this is so, and the simple answer is that magnets need to be shipped in big boxes and parcels.

While the actual size of the product may be relatively small, the invisible magnetic field surrounding it may be many multiples greater in size.

Magnetic fields are potentially hazardous for several reasons, namely that they may:

1. Disrupt freight carrier electronic tracking/handling equipment,
2. Cause damage to other articles and products being shipped in its proximity, and:
3. Interfere with aircraft navigational instruments.

While magnets are not classified as "Dangerous Goods" per se, there is significant regulation in place to control the manner in which magnetic products are handled and shipped by freight carriers.

So, what sort of packaging will my magnets arrive in?
In the vast majority of cases, your magnets will arrive in a large satchel or cardboard parcel.

Inside the packaging, your magnets will usually be encased within recycled newspaper, biodegradable bubble wrap, or polystyrene foam (or a combination of all three). Larger magnets may also need to be shipped in heavy duty metal-lined containers. Occasionally magnets may be shipped on skids or pallets.

By encasing the magnets in layers of non-ferrous wrapping material, we increase the distance between the magnet and the package exterior. This is called an "air gap". The air gap needs to be large enough that the magnetic field of the goods diminishes to near zero by the time it penetrates through to the outside environment.

Is there any way to reduce the cost of shipping?
Unfortunately not.

Rest assured we always keep our freight costs to a minimum, whilst still following the relevant regulations on magnet shipping. Safety is our utmost priority, and we will never ship products that are insufficiently packaged or which may pose a hazard. We always ship products in the cheapest, safest manner possible.

At the relevant distances set out by the individual regulations, most Aussie Magnets product’s Gauss and/or Oersted (A/m) measurements fall significantly below the restricted threshold.

By Plane

On commercial passenger flights, magnets can be transported in your checked-baggage (in most instances). Although magnets are rigorously regulated, they are not classified as hazardous or dangerous goods.

While magnets may also be transported on carry-on luggage, this is not advisable. A lack of understanding by airport security may mean delays or possible confiscation of the goods.

Choosing the right magnet is tricky. If you spend a few moments understanding how magnets work, you'll be much more likely to get the right magnet the first time!

The most distinguishing feature of our magnets is the material they are made from. Rare Earth (also known as Neodymium), Ceramic Ferrite, Alnico Cast Steel, and Flexible Magnetic Rubber all have different characteristics that are better suited to some jobs than others.

You need to decide what is most important to you. Consider your application - what is the single most important specification? Perhaps you need the magnet to fit into a given size, or perhaps you need the magnet to lift a specific weight (aka Pull Strength)? Pick the most important characteristic, and then see what magnet is best suited using the table below.

Measuring the strength of an invisible force is difficult. Throughout our website you'll see a number of different scales used to measure the strength of a magnet. Each of these measurements have their advantages and disadvantages, and can interpret the same magnet differently.So, which unit is most important to you?

Pull Strength

The approximate, calculated amount of force required to remove the magnet from a piece of un-coated 3mm mild steel.It's also the maximum amount of weight the magnet will support when attached to the same steel. e.g. 452 grams, 14kg. 

Thicker metals will increase the pull strength, whereas thinner metals will decrease the pull strength of the magnet. You should consider the material you will be attaching your magnet to when evaluating the required pull strength.Allowances should be made for any coatings (such as powder coating, paint, vinyl, plastic, etc.) which may affect the strength of the magnet.At Aussie Magnets, all pull strengths are measured against 3mm mild steel. The strengths we list are mathematical calculations only, and will almost always be higher or lower depending on your application!As such, pull strength measurements should be used as helpful guides only; they should not be explicitly relied upon for product/project design purposes. We advise customers to engage qualified product design engineers, or conduct their own testing, to determine the suitability of any magnetic product prior to use.

Grade

A balance of the thermal properties of the magnet with the maximum potential energy.e.g. N38, N42, C8Rare Earth and Ferrite magnets are available in different grade specifications. Generally, a higher grade offers more strength at the same size, but its thermal properties tend to decrease, meaning that the magnet cannot withstand high temperatures before losing its magnetism.For most purposes a higher grade is desirable, except where operating temperature is critical.Read more about 'Grades'

Gauss

A surface measure of the magnetic flux density per square centimeter.e.g. 3000 gaussTake care when using gauss – it's possible for a tiny magnet and a large magnet to have exactly the same gauss reading. Why? Because Gauss is measured per square centimeter and is a measure of the potential of the material, rather than the strength of the individual magnet.Higher grade magnets have a higher potential and hence, a higher gauss reading, explaining why some of our larger magnets have a gauss less than our smaller magnets - it's because our smaller magnets are of a higher grade, allowing us to pack more strength into a smaller size.

1. RAW MATERIALS

Minerals - such as Neodymium, Iron and Boron - are sourced from all around the world. Many required elements, such as Neodymium, are very uncommon and newver found on their own. They must be heavily refined & processed before the material is useable!

2. MILLING & BLENDING

The course materials are jet-milled down into powder, which is then blended into an incredibly precise composition.At this point the powder is in danger of oxidation, and must be kept in an inert gas, such as Argon!

3. PRESSING

The mixture is compacted into shape and a magnetic field is appled to ensure all particles are aligned... this maximises magnetic output!

4. SINTERING

The ingredients are sintered at temperatures in excess of 1,000°c to achieve 99% density.During this process, the magnet will shrink by nearly a fifth of its size! They are rapidly cooled, then re-heated to 600°c before being cooled again.

5. FINISHING 

A "clean-up" takes place by sanding the magnet into exact measurements. Finishing touches are added last. Finishing touches may include the addition of a glossy nickel protective coating, re-magnetising, and marking polarity.

Our magnets can be magnetised across any axis, hence allowing them to be used to different effect. The 'Direction of Magnetism' determines on which side of the magnet the north and south poles appear.Here are our most common directions of magnetism:

Magnetic Poles are the surfaces from which the invisible lines of magnetic flux emanate and connect on return to the magnet. When allowed to rotate freely, the 'North' pole of a magnet will seek the North Pole of the Earth, and likewise the 'South' pole of a magnet will align with the South Pole of the Earth.

Where required, we can identify the poles of your magnets, or you can identify them yourself using our Polarity Identifiers. Some of our magnets feature North Pole Dots which indicate the North Pole of a magnet. If this feature is essential to you, contact us to find out which magnets feature north pole dots.

You'll need to consider the type of surface the magnet is being attached to when considering what type of adhesive to use. If the surface is uneven, an adhesive with plenty of "body" will be needed so that it conforms to the uneven surface.

General advice on gluing:

Our general advice is to use a two-part epoxy glue, such as Selley's Araldite (widely available at hardware stores and hobby shops), however no single adhesive is perfect, and you'll need to select one that is suited to your design.

ALWAYS:

ensure that the surfaces being bonded are clean (wipe surfaces with oil-free solvent such as acetone or isopropyl alcohol) and allowed to dry.

•     lightly sand or scratch the surface (see below).
•     move your magnets away from ferrous materials as the glue dries.

NEVER:

Use hot glue guns; the extreme heat of the glue can demagnetize your magnets.

• Roughen the surface
• Epoxy glues and other adhesives require a coarse surface.

You will need to roughen the smooth, shiny surface coating of the magnet in order to give the glue an abraded surface to adhere to.

You can use light grit sandpaper to roughen the surface of the magnet, or scratch with a sharp nail/screw.

Remember to clean the magnet after roughening!

Specific material surfaces:

    Metal

A two-part epoxy glue, such as Araldite. It is especially important here to create a coarse/abraded surface for the glue to adhere to; use a key or nail to scratch the surface of the metal prior to gluing.

    Plastic

Some plastics are easier to adhere to than others. For hard plastics such as ABS or PVC, you can use a two-part epoxy glue, such as Araldite. Flimsier plastic, such as Polypropylene or Polyethylene (commonly used in drink bottles and plastic bags) can generally not be adhered to. You might also have success using Loctite products, such as Loctite Plastix Bonder Epoxy. Do not use double-sided tape.

•     Paper/Cardboard
•     Super glue (cyanoacrylate), or "crazy glue". We also offer a range of self-adhesive rubber magnets.

    Rubber

Use a two-part epoxy glue, such as Araldite, or a softer glue such as Liquid Nails. We also offer a range of self-adhesive rubber magnets.

    Wood

A two-part epoxy glue, such as Araldite. Where possible, drill or bore a hole into the wood and sink the magnet in place.

For applications incorporating fabrics or similar materials, you might consider sewing/hemming the magnet into the fabric. Note this method will not work with flexible rubber magnets!

Which rubber material thickness?

 The thickness of magnetic rubber material varies between products. We stock a variety of products in varying thicknesses to suit a multitude of applications.

Regardless of thickness, magnetic rubber cannot attract through material or an air-gap; your magnetic rubber must be in direct contact with a ferrous surface!

0.4mm Thick
The thinnest 0.4mm magnetic material is inherently lightweight, and magnetically weak. 
SUITABLE FOR: This is suitable for inexpensive labels, and mass-produced printed promotional magnets that are cost-effective.

0.6mm Thick
Thin 0.6mm material is still lightweight, with moderate magnetic strength.
SUITABLE FOR: This is suitable for general purpose applications, whiteboard labels, and printed promotional magnets.

0.9mm Thick
Thicker 0.9mm is generally a higher quality, with added durability and strength. 
SUITABLE FOR: This is better suited to commercial applications, such as warehouse racking, vehical signage, and craft.

1.6mm Thick
The thickest 1.6mm material is the strongest and most durable rubber available.
SUITABLE FOR: Used in specialty applications where the power of the magnetic flux is critical to the application.

Stainless steel ("SS" for short) is a special form of steel which contains chromium, and offers a greater resistance to tarnishing and rust.

The influence of permanent magnets on stainless steel varies greatly, depending on the material. There are three broad families of stainless steel, classified according to their crystalline structure. Here, we discuss the magnetic properies of these materials...

"AUSTENITIC" Stainless Steel
Austenitic (known as 200 and 300 series) SS is the most popular type of stainless steel, accounting for 70% of all stainless steels. Austenitic SS is a general purpose material, with good corrosion resistence. This material is PARAMAGNETIC / NON-MAGNETIC. Magnets will not attract austenitic stainless steel.

Examples: Type 201, 202, 302, 303, 304, 316 and 316L

"FERRITIC" Stainless Steel

Ferritic SS is a less expensive material with better engineering properties that austenitic SS, but has a reduced resistance to corrosion. This material is FERROMAGNETIC. Magnets will attract ferritic stainless steel.

Examples: Type 430F Solenoid Quality, Type 430FR Solenoid Quality, and Type 446

"MARTENSITIC" Stainless Steel
Martensitic SS has a very low resistence to corrosion in comparison to Austenitic & Ferritic SS. Martensitic steel, however, is is extremely strong and tough; the material can be hardened by heat treatment, and is highly machinable. This material is FERROMAGNETIC. Magnets will attract martensitic stainless steel.

Examples: Type 410, 416, 420, 440B and 17-4

Why not rubber stripping?
Rubber stripping does not have the strength to pass through material once hemmed into the flyscreen border. It is also less durable that rare earth magnets, especially in rugged or outdoor applications where it may be exposed to the elements.

In addition, the flexible rubber is difficult to roll up and store when the flyscreen cover is removed from the door/window/vent. It is also difficult to incorporate in your sewing task, and generally requires a rigid edge frame.

Rubber stripping is better suited to applications such as double glazing and shower door closures.

If you need to fasten a magnet to your design or device, you can use either mechanical or adhesive-based methods.

Self-adhesive

Some of our flexible magnets feature a 3M self-adhesive to allow for easy attaching.

Magnetic fields permeate most materials!

A magnetic field will effortlessly pass through any non-ferrous material

"Ferrous" means relating to, or containing, iron.

This means that the field will remain unaffected... even if the magnet were encased by a barrier made of wood, lead, plastic, etc!

However the field is affected in the presence of a ferrous metal. Ferrous metals warp the magnetic field.

You can't technically "block" the field off, but you can "bend" it away!

• You can't stop a magnetic field dead in its tracks, but you can manipulate and distort it!
• In many cases this is as good as "shielding" the magnetic field!
• In the diagram below, a magnetic field is shown in conjuction with a piece of steel.
• The magnetism doesn't stop when it runs into the steel, but instead runs along that ferrous metal as if it were an extension of the magnet itself!
• If the steel is thick enough (as shown), the magnetic field will be so distorted that it will not be felt on the opposite side of the metal!

To bend the field away:

If you select the side of a magnet that you don't want to magnetic field, you could encapsulate or cover here with thick steel or other ferrous metal. This will push some or all of the magnetic field out sideways, along the surface of the metal.

We stock a range of Ferrite and Rare Earth magnets that are capped in metal holding pots which results in a diminished field on the covered side.

We also carry a small range of single-sided Ferrite disc magnets.

Your assembly includes a backing plate, magnetic front and two aluminium spacers (10mm deep, 15mm Diameter) for mounting to your wall. The system is easy to install and won't make a mess!

Mounts easily to your wall and contains strong magnets to keep your knives or tools within easy reach. Simply hold them up and they snap in place. Remove them with a gentle pull.

As wall materials vary, screws for fixing to wall are not included. For advice on suitable screw systems, contact your local hardware store.

Affixing Instructions:

Step 1.

Using appropriate screws for your surface (not included), affix the backing plate to the wall.

As per the diagram below, ensure you utilise the included round aluminium spacers.

Step 2.

Align the cover plate over the backing plate and allow the cover to attach by itself.

Remember to carefully use the tips of your fingers, to ensure you don't get pinched.

Step 3.

The cover plate is held in place magnetically.

Use both hands to align the cover plate into position.

Cleaning Advice:

Wipe clean with a soft cloth dampened with water and a mild dish detergent or soap, if necessary.

Wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Our cost calculations are complicated, and are based on numerous factors. These include the cargo's weight, cubing, destination, the suitability of freight carriers, the dollar value of the order, and ability to trace through the delivery network.

Orders with a high value will be shipped via a method that allows article tracking, and will be automatically covered by insurance at no extra cost to you. For most orders over $500 shipping costs can be waived upon request.

Please note that we are constantly looking for ways to reduce our freight costs, and will always pass these discounts on to our customers.

Why do they need to be shipped in big packaging?
We understand that at a glance our freight charges appear higher than expected, given the small size of the products you are ordering. We are often asked why this is so, and the simple answer is that magnets need to be shipped in big boxes and parcels.

While the actual size of the product may be relatively small, the invisible magnetic field surrounding it may be many multiples greater in size.

Magnetic fields are potentially hazardous for several reasons, namely that they may:

1. Disrupt freight carrier electronic tracking/handling equipment,
2. Cause damage to other articles and products being shipped in its proximity, and:
3. Interfere with aircraft navigational instruments.

While magnets are not classified as "Dangerous Goods" per se, there is significant regulation in place to control the manner in which magnetic products are handled and shipped by freight carriers.

So, what sort of packaging will my magnets arrive in?

In the vast majority of cases, your magnets will arrive in a large satchel or cardboard parcel.

Inside the packaging, your magnets will usually be encased within recycled newspaper, biodegradable bubble wrap, or polystyrene foam (or a combination of all three). Larger magnets may also need to be shipped in heavy duty metal-lined containers. Occasionally magnets may be shipped on skids or pallets.

By encasing the magnets in layers of non-ferrous wrapping material, we increase the distance between the magnet and the package exterior. This is called an "air gap". The air gap needs to be large enough that the magnetic field of the goods diminishes to near zero by the time it penetrates through to the outside environment.

Is there any way to reduce the cost of shipping?

Unfortunately not.

Rest assured we always keep our freight costs to a minimum, whilst still following the relevant regulations on magnet shipping. Safety is our utmost priority, and we will never ship products that are insufficiently packaged or which may pose a hazard. We always ship products in the cheapest, safest manner possible.

What is rust?
Rusting is a chemical reaction between iron and oxygen, in the presence of water. The reaction creates a flaky, reddish iron-oxide coating as the iron corrodes away. Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass will eventually convert entirely to rust and disintegrate. Rusting is more prevalant in coastal or marine environments, where there is greater exposure to moisture.

How does rust affect metal and magnets? 
Magnets only attract to materials which are ferrous. Ferrous means "relating to, or containing, iron". As such, magnets need iron to attract to. As rust spreads, the iron corrodes and diminishes. A reduction in iron content means there is less ferrous material for a magnet to attract to. The end result is that magnetic power/induction is reduced.

Will the magnets rust? 
Any material containing iron will rust, unless properly protected. Information on our Rare Earth and Ferrite magnets are as follows:

RARE EARTH 
Our Rare Earth magnets are spray-coated in a protective nickel coating to combat corrosion. This coating is susceptible to chipping, which may allow corrosion to occur.

FERRITE
Our Ferrite magnets are un-coated, but are less susceptible to corrosion due to their consitution. They are ceramic in nature which gives them a greater resistance to rust, however over time may require some form of coating or protection.

How can I prevent rusting? 
Rusting occurs when iron is exposed to air and moisture. The way to combat rusting is to prevent exposure to air and moisture. This can be done by coating/sealing the magnet or metal entirely in some protective layering (such as plastic, rubber, glue, etc.). Make sure you have sealed the magnet surface entirely! You need to cut off all sources of oxygen and moisture.

Will a protective coating affect the magnet? 
Magnets operate when brought into proximity with iron. When you apply a coating, you increase the distance between magnet and iron. Therefore, thick coatings will result in a reduction in magnet strength.

In most cases, you can afford to remove information that is not immediately relevant to people when they are standing in front of their fridge, etc.

Think about your fridge magnet...

You might consider including:

•     Your trading name
•     Contact number
•     Promotional message
•     Website address

You may want to include related images, logos, the suburb/area you service, etc.

You can probably do without:

•     Your ABN
•     Registered PTY LTD name
•     Personal contact name
•     Street address
•     Fax number
•     Email address

You can really maximise the impact of your promotion by remembering that "less is more"!

While your artwork design is (of course) entirely up to you, we generally hear better feedback when you limit the amount of information on your magnet to the essentials!

File Format:

All artwork must be print-ready, in CMYK colour format.

We request artwork be supplied as vector files in one of the following formats:

•     PDF (.pdf)
•     Adobe Illustrator (.ai)

Text should be converted to lines. This can be done in Illustrator by selecting 'Type' in the toolbar, and clicking 'Create Outlines' from the drop-down menu.

Your designer can assist in preparing artwork in the appropriate format.

We also accept image files in the following formats:

•     JPEG (.jpg)
•     PNG (.png)
•     Bitmap (.bmp)

However note that we cannot guarantee maximum image clarity if artwork is submitted as an image file.

Resolution & Size:

Artwork should be supplied in correct sizing.

For vector files, resolution should not be an issue when supplied as a PDF or Adobe Illustrator file.

For image files, resolution should be set to 600dpi for text and logo art.

Maximum file size accepted is 10MB via email, and 100MB via USB or on a disc.

Bleed Area:

Artwork must be supplied with a 3mm bleed around all edges.

As a simple precaution, a further 3mm "buffer area" is suggested around internal edges before text begins.

No Artwork Borders:

During the production process, your artwork will be printed onto large sheets and then cut down to their correct individual sizes.

When the material is being cut, there is a chance the material might slip or move on either side by a small margin.

While this is completely normal and ususally un-noticeable after the print job is finished, it becomes glaringly obvious with the presence of a border!

If you need to fasten a magnet to your design or device, you can use either mechanical or adhesive-based methods.

Bolts/Screws

Some types of magnets, such as our Pot magnets, are specially designed to allow for easy attaching, as they feature threads, hooks, countersunk holes, etc.

Sewing

For applications incorporating fabrics or similar materials, you might consider sewing/hemming the magnet into the fabric. Note this method will not work with flexible rubber magnets!

Glues/Adhesives

If there is no structure to attach the magnet to, consider using adhesives. You'll need to consider the type of surface the magnet is being attached to when considering what type of adhesive to use. If the surface is uneven, an adhesive with plenty of "body" will be needed so that it conforms to the uneven surface.

In general, we recommend a two-part epoxy glue (such as Araldite) for most applications.

No single adhesive is perfect, and you'll need to select one that is suited to your design. As with all adhesive applications, ensure that the surfaces being bonded are clean and dry before using the glue.

Self-adhesive

Some of our flexible magnets feature a 3M self-adhesive to allow for easy attaching.

1. RAW MATERIALS

Minerals - such as Neodymium, Iron and Boron - are sourced from all around the world. Many required elements, such as Neodymium, are very uncommon and newver found on their own. They must be heavily refined & processed before the material is useable!

2. MILLING & BLENDING

The course materials are jet-milled down into powder, which is then blended into an incredibly precise composition.At this point the powder is in danger of oxidation, and must be kept in an inert gas, such as Argon!

3. PRESSING

The mixture is compacted into shape and a magnetic field is appled to ensure all particles are aligned... this maximises magnetic output!

4. SINTERING

The ingredients are sintered at temperatures in excess of 1,000°c to achieve 99% density.During this process, the magnet will shrink by nearly a fifth of its size! They are rapidly cooled, then re-heated to 600°c before being cooled again.

5. FINISHING 

A "clean-up" takes place by sanding the magnet into exact measurements. Finishing touches are added last. Finishing touches may include the addition of a glossy nickel protective coating, re-magnetising, and marking polarity.

Magnets can only be influenced by, and attracted to, "ferrous" materials. A ferrous material is any metal which relates to or contains iron.

Obviously magnets will not attract to wood, plastic, fabric, rubber, cardboard, etc
